Weekly Reflection #4- Technology in Lindsay Park Elementary School

Epic! books at Lindsay park elementary

This week we had our first in-situs for classes EDCI 336, and EDCI 302 at Lindsay Park Elementary. I was extremely excited but had some nerves when going into the school. After meeting the principal these nerves dissipated quickly. We spoke briefly about how technology can be effective in the classroom, but at times it does not need to be present. Which I agree with completely. It is particularly important that students learn how to use technology for learning, for this to happen, students need to be taught digital citizenship.

At this in situ my cohort and I got to help students log into and navigate Epic! books, in two different learning environments, and groups of students. I was extremely impressed with how well students could use the technology in the classroom.

Technology in the classroom

First, we were in the library, where the students were seated at tables in groups. The library had a large board that the teacher could cast her screen onto, so that the teacher could model how to get onto Epic!. There were some technical difficulties with the casting, but the teacher was prepared and had printed out sheets that showed the steps, with pictures for each of the students to follow.

The students each used their own iPads to access the Epic! app. The iPads were a highly effective source of technology for the children to use, they are compact, light, and the touch screen is something that the children use easily. The children were provided headphones, with an applicator for the iPad, allowing them to concentrate on their read to me books. IPads allow educators to be able to easily move, observe and help students in the classroom environment.

Next, we headed to Ana’s classroom, where the students were using chrome books to access Epic!. In this classroom there was a projector, which was used by the teacher to model how to access Epic!. The projector’s image was visible for all students at their tables.  The students were seated in group tables, and each had their own Chromebook. Once the students got their Chromebook, they were able to practice logging in individually.

The chrome books were an efficient resource for the children to use, but with all the children trying to login at once onto Epic!, there were delays with the internet. The waiting provided an opportunity for students to practice their patience, like Mrs. Pakenham, our teacher, had mentioned.

Organization & effective use of technology

1.Model the use of technology, and steps for all children to see

Having a smart board or projector that all students can see is important, so that the students can watch the teacher go through the steps, before trying it on their own.

2.Ensure there is restrictions set on Wi-Fi

When students logged into the chrome books, and clicked on the google chrome icon, the computers were set to automatically go to their school website, from there they could access Epic! in the toolbar. This avoids unnecessary searching and reminds them of the task.

3.Number of devices

Since there were several educators present, it worked well to have each student have their own device. Each student was able to receive assistance quickly if needed. If there were fewer educators in a room, it would be more efficient to have less devices, and have kids work in groups.

4. Type of device

The chrome books, and iPads were great technological devices for kids to use. They are both light and stored easily. Additionally, they can be moved to any setting that you want the learning to take place.

technology in classrooms now vs then

In schools there used to always be designated computer labs, and teachers would have to coordinate with other teachers when they needed it. Usually, this room was hidden away, and students would be stuck to their seat. With Chromebooks, and iPads students can access this technology in any space, and bring the device to the teacher if they need help.

Traditionally classrooms only had whiteboards, or chalkboards, and now many of them are equipped with SMART boards, and projectors which provide a more interactive experience for kids. This technology also enables educators to model tasks, learning, and activities more efficiently. These are also useful for students to present their learning.

Technology advancements have allowed us to continue learning, and teacher through a pandemic. Classes often took place virtually, or in a blended classroom, with in person and online learning. If students are sick or unable to attend class in person, they are now able to join virtually.

Additionally, technology has expedited research because students do not need to search for books. They can browse the web to find reliable sources.
